East Kilbride West candidate, David Watson, has backed moves by SNP colleagues at Westminster who have tabled an amendment to the Finance Bill calling for fuel fairness.
“The SNP supports a halt to the Chancellor’s plan for a further 3 pence hike in fuel prices in August, and the introduction of a fuel duty regulator to stabilise prices in the long term.
“A broad range of organisations including the Scottish Taxi Federation, the Federation of Small Businesses and the Road Hauliers’ Association have spoken out in support of a fairer fuel regime.
“There are many reasons to oppose this flawed budget – the tax cut for millionaires, the tax grab on pensioners and the double inflationary rise on air passenger duty.
“But the failure to deal with rising fuel prices at this time of economic stagnation is nothing short of negligent.
“Fuel costs are hitting businesses hard – from famers to taxi drivers and small grocers. Commuters are also suffering from the rising cost of petrol at the pumps.
“Where we can make a difference for hard working people, the SNP has done what it can to help.
“An SNP Administration at South Lanarkshire Council will support SMEs by increasing participation in procurement and by continuing the Small Business Bonus Scheme.
“We will invest in Park and Ride facilities and also maintain and expand the injured veteran’s concessionary bus travel schemes.
“By maintain a Living Wage for all Council employees and continuing the Council Tax Freeze, we will help to protect family incomes from these damaging Westminster policies as far as we can under the current constitutional settlement.”
