East Kilbride East candidate and UNISON Branch Officer, Gladys Miller, has welcomed an announcement from the First Minister that Scotland’s first Women’s Employment Summit will be held this year.
Alex Salmond told the annual STUC Congress in Inverness that helping more women into work is a top priority if Scotland’s economy is to grow faster.
“This announcement from the First Minister is so welcome and shows how the SNP are committed to addressing the issues involving unemployment amongst women.
“This summit will focus efforts on creating more jobs and helping females into employment and already talks are underway between the Scottish Government and STUC to look at ways of attracting more women into manufacturing.
“Women have a lot to offer our economy we must do everything we can to ensure we utilise their talents and abilities.
“That is why an SNP Administration at South Lanarkshire Council will work with other councils and the Scottish Government to ensure we do everything we can to encourage more jobs and investment to the town.
“Two thirds of the thousands of people benefitting from the SNP’s introduction of the living wage across Scotland are women.
“Women’s progress in the workplace needs to be nurtured and I believe an SNP Administration at South Lanarkshire Council, working with the Scottish Government, is a step in the right direction.”
