FABIANI WELCOMES SCOTTISH GOVERNMENT SUPPORT AS 4,710 IN SOUTH LANARKSHIRE AFFECTED BY BEDROOM TAX
New figures show 84,000 families have been helped so far this year by £35 million funding the Scottish Government has provided to support those hit by Tory Bedroom Tax. Of that, over £2.2 million has been allocated to South Lanarkshire.
Linda Fabiani MSP is today welcoming the figures – which comes just days after UK Secretary of State for Work and Pensions Iain Duncan Smith signalled the ideological Tory assault on the poor is set to continue with further cuts to support for disabled people.
Commenting, Linda said:
“I welcome these new figures showing the Scottish Government has helped 84,000 families hit by the Tory Bedroom Tax this year. 4,710 awards have been granted in South Lanarkshire alone – with many in East Kilbride benefiting from this support. There is reassurance that of those affected by the cruel Bedroom Tax are able secure some form of mitigation as part of the Scottish Welfare Fund.
“It is desperately sad however that the Tory austerity agenda is going to further cut support for the most needy and vulnerable in our communities – a majority of whom have long-term conditions and disabilities.
“This highlights exactly why the Scottish Parliament needs full powers over welfare to allow us to support and empower people, rather than leaving the necessary powers with the Tories and allowing them to continue to push more people into poverty.
