Linda Fabiani MSP for East Kilbride has welcomed the news from Children’s Minister Aileen Campbell of a £4.5m package for early learning and childcare opportunities for vulnerable two year olds in each of the next three years from April 2012.
Linda said “I welcome this announcement and commend the Scottish Government for prioritising investment in early years to improve the life chances of vulnerable two year olds.
“Getting it right from the beginning prevents problems from becoming crises and gives our children the best start in life.
“The SNP Government has initiated a significant shift to preventative spend through the establishment of a £270m Early Years Change Fund over this parliamentary term and this latest step will help to expand the quality of early learning and childcare provision.
“This continued investment will make a real difference for all of Scotland’s children and families and I welcome it warmly.”
Ms Campbell said this will deliver free early learning and childcare provision for looked after two year olds.
She said “As a Government, we are committed to increasing quality early learning and childcare opportunities as part of our wider drive to improve future life chances for all Scotland’s children by giving them the best start in life.
“While this commitment focuses on two year olds who are looked after, we will continue to work with our partners in the Early Years Task Force to identify how we should best support children and families in the future.”
