FABIANI: SCOTLAND’S FIRE SAFETY REGULATIONS ARE ROBUST – BUT IT’S RIGHT WE TAKE A FRESH LOOK AT RULES
Linda Fabiani MSP for East Kilbride has welcomed the Scottish Government’s review of building and fire safety regulation.
In the wake of the Grenfell Tower disaster in London, the Scottish Government has set up a Ministerial Working Group to take a fresh look at building and fire safety regulations.
The second meeting took place last week, chaired by Communities Secretary Angela Constance. The meeting was attended by the Housing Minister Kevin Stewart, Community Safety Minister Annabelle Ewing, and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.
Commenting, Linda said: “Scotland’s fire and safety regulations are robust and classifications are updated on a regular basis.
“However, we cannot be complacent given the travesty of Grenfell Tower. It’s very important that we take a fresh look at all of our regulations and I welcome the Scottish Government’s new Ministerial Working Group on building and fire safety.
“I am also pleased that South Lanarkshire Council has carried out an urgent assessment of its high rise housing blocks, finding none with the same specification of cladding materials as those used at Grenfell Tower.
“The fire service is busier than ever now with safety checks in premises around the country, ensuring these robust standards are upheld and to provide reassurance and advice.”
