Linda Fabiani MSP for East Kilbride has once again called for a fairer deal for motorists after reports that, despite Scotland being an oil rich country, Scots are paying up to 40% more than other EU nations for a litre of petrol.
“Westminster is raking in a fortune in taxes from Scotland’s fuel. We have called for a fuel duty regulator time and time again to stabilise fuel prices.
“People in East Kilbride are doubly hit as they pay more for fuel than those in neighbour parts, which BP claim is due to the competition in the local trading area.
“Scotland’s finances are consistently stronger than the UK’s, over half of the North Sea tax revenues are still to come, and our oil and gas assets are worth £1.5 trillion or even more. Why should we be forced into paying excessive fuel prices without ever seeing the economic benefits that countries such as Norway receive from their oil?
“With our abundant resources, only a Yes vote next September gives Scotland the powers to create the fairer and wealthier society we all want to live in.”
