Linda Fabiani MSP for East Kilbride has been part of a team which has co-ordinated this year’s Mary’s Meals campaign in the Scottish Parliament. The Mary’s Meals project provides a daily meal in a school to chronically poor children in countries such as Malawi, Liberia and Haiti. In 2002 the project fed 200 children but now feeds over 700,000 providing a lifeline to the very poorest families.
MSPs have been donating backpacks filled with basic school equipment pencils, pens, paper and some personal items such as a t-shirt, towel, toothpaste which will now be sent by Mary’s Meals to children, allowing them to go to school and get a meal.
“Mary’s Meals is a fantastic project, doing excellent work helping some of the world’s poorest children get to school and get a meal. The average cost to feed a child a meal whilst at school is about £10 for the whole school year. It certainly puts into perspective the difficulties we face, when there are children in the world who depend on such initiatives in order to get one meal a day and a basic education.
“The Backpack project is a key part of their on-going work. I am delighted that the Parliament Staff were able to join schools, businesses, clubs and churches throughout the country to do our bit to help some of the world’s poorest children.
“I hope we can encourage more people in East Kilbride to get involved with the Mary’s Meals backpack project. The backpack provides real practical help in the education and wellbeing of some of the world’s most impoverished children. It’s an easy thing to do that makes a big difference and I hope more and more people are inspired to get involved.
