Linda Fabiani MSP for East Kilbride has called on Westminster to stop punishing families after the latest figures released by the European Commission showed UK fuel tax was approaching 60 per cent of the cost of fuel.
The proportion of tax levied on fuel by the UK Treasury is the highest amongst all EU members at 58.6% for unleaded and 56.8% for diesel.
“The UK Government must recognise how soaring fuel prices are holding back economic recovery impacting on the transport industry, including bus services and fares, as well as hauliers and households.
“If Scotland had control of fuel duty, the SNP government would introduce a fuel duty regulator to lower prices now.
“If Westminster will not act, the powers should be passed to the Scottish Parliament so that it can.
“There are a record number of companies looking to explore and develop in the North Sea.
“Scotland has a trillion pound North Sea asset base – with some 40 per cent of reserves remaining and over half of the value still to be extracted yet Westminster continues to punish families with soaring fuel costs. ?
“This dichotomy absolutely underlines the need for Scotland to gain responsibility over our own resources with independence, for the long-term benefit of the country.? ?
“Oil and gas will continue to provide a very significant number of direct and indirect jobs for a very long time to come.??
“With responsibility for our own vast natural resources, an independent Scotland will be able to make the most of these massive revenues, including an oil fund for future generations, while continuing to support investment in one of the nation’s most important industries.
